Informix ESQL/C pre-processor

I am having problems with the Informix ESQL/C pre-processor: basically, it is not flexible enough. What I would like to have is a pre-compiler that allows one declare statement id's and select cursors as host variables and to use them in PREPARE, SELECT, DECLARE, etc. statements. Is there anything in the works to provide this functionality. Failing this, has anybody out there ever tried go around the pre-compiler and write their own interface calls? (They look somewhat like the Oracle Call Interface). If they have, can they tell me if the calls have changed much from release to release? Enquiring (and desperate) Mind(s) want to Know!
