Market Survey for a Database Data Generation Utility Dear Database Professional: Can we get your opinion on a new database product? Our company is considering marketing a database utility which fills tables with random, but "realistic" looking, data. The program's goal is to allow a database developer to create a database structure consisting of tables, fields, and relational links between tables. The program would then fill the tables with random data according to the rules set forth for each field. For instance, fields could be filled with such things as person last names, organization names, states, phone numbers, values from a user-defined list, or a user-defined data type. The relational links between tables could be one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one (for lookup tables) or many-to-many. The number of records for most of the tables could be specified by the user, up to hundreds of thousands if that is what's needed. The user interface would probably present the database structure in a Win95 Explorer-like view. We plan on offering native database access to dBASE, FoxPro, Paradox and Access tables, with support for ODBC data sources (e.g. Oracle, Sybase, etc.) The price for this product has not been set, but we're aiming for the "less than $400" range. What do you think? Is this product something that you, or a database professional in general, would find useful? We appreciate any comments you can give us.
