This is because most, if not all, of the file names are the same between versions and if you install two versions in the same directory you will end up installing one version on top of another, over- writing the first engines programs and files. > > - how to install other Informix-products beside the OnLine-versions like > > Informix-4gl > > Informix-RDS > > Informix-Gateway for DRDA Usually these need to go in the directory with the engine but you can always try installing these in their own directories and then setting you PATH to include both the development tools and the engine directories. > > - the ksh-environement variabels which have to be set like > > $INFORMIXDIR > > $INFORMIXSERVER > > $ONCONFIG > > $PATH ... and so on. The environment variables need to point to one instance of the database engine or another. You cannot have your INFORMIXDIR point to both the 6.0 and 7.10 engines. You can switch between the environments by resetting the environment variables to point from one engine to another. I do this in shell scripts that just reset these variables. You can have both engines running at the same time and you can also have multiple instances of each version running as long as you don't run out of physical memory. If you want to have multiple instances of the database running you will have to make sure that the SERVERNUM is different for each instance of the engine you have running. This is true for all current versions of the INFORMIX-OnLine datbase engine. Mike
