I have used the driver that you mention. Tests I have run using straight C code using both ESQL/C and the Q+E driver show that the ODBC drive only takes about 5-10% longer to complete tasks then ESQL/C alone. The tests I run include INSERTing 1000 rows, retrieving 1000 rows, and updating 1000 rows. My experiece with with Visual C++'s CRecordSet classes show that there is a lot of overhead associated with MFC's wrapper around ODBC. Possibly you are running into the same thing with Visual Basic.
