Will's IDS 9.4 ontape backups to a disk file outgrew the TAPESIZE setting of 8 GB and he asked whether simply doubling it to 16 GB posed any Informix or AIX risks. Replies noted that much larger values work fine (one user used 150 GB for a 120 GB migration) provided the OS ulimit for the running user permits files that big, and suggested tuning the block size for performance. Others mentioned setting TAPESIZE to 0 for unlimited size; one claimed it was v10-only, but Will reported 9.4 supports it and planned to use it.

Hello everyone. I have a IDS 9.4 database configured so that the backups (we
use ontape) get written to a disk file. The TAPESIZE parm is currently set to
8192000 (IE: 8 gig). the database just exceeded that amount during a recent
lev 0 so I need to increase this value. The server is AIX 5.2
I was thinking of doubling this parm to be 16384000 (16 gig).
Does anyone know of any 'gotchas' either informix related or unix related to
be necessarily concerned about?
Thanks

I am not sure if this applies on v9 - you'll need to check, but on v10 you can
set TAPEDEV to 0 and it will allow the backup process to write as much data as
the backup device will support - so if you had a giant file system to backup
to you would not have to worry about tweaking TAPEDEV to keep up with an
expanding data set - until it grew larger than the file system of course.

Two plus years ago, I migrated a 120GB database via that method (No tape
drives on destination server).... I set the TAPESIZE to 150GB...
Remember to adjust the Block size for performance... It wasn't the
fastest due to network traffic, but it DID work....

Tape Size of zero is not an option on IDS9, 16Gb should be OK provided
the O/S ulimit setting for the running user allows files of this size.

In my earlier response I mistakenly wrote TAPEDEV where I meant to write
TAPESIZE - I understand that this feature (setting TAPESIZE to 0) is not
available until 10.00 but I didn't want my typos to confuse anyone...
