James, I ran into a similar problem with one of my 5.X engines. It turns out that in my case the problem was with the number of semaphores. When you bring up a 5.X engine, online grabs a semphore each user. So that if you have your number of users set to 150, it takes 150 semaphores. You can check this by the Unix command "ipcs -s -a" and look in the NSEMS column. Even if you have less than 150 users actually logged in, it still grabs 150 semaphores. What happens is that you have a max number of semaphores (which is a configurable kernel parameter), and when you try to bring up several instances with lots of potential users defined, you will get the error message you described below if you don't have enough semaphores left for the engine to come Online. We had to increase the number of semaphores in our kernel to bypass this problem. And this is without touching any other } parameters. } } Questions: } We are unsure if somehow maybe the number of licenses we have for } the system is somehow coded into the software so that we possibly } can't ever have more than 30 users attach to the the informix instances. } We can determine this ourselves as we don't know how many licenses } are currently approved. } } Does informix do some extra allocation not included in the shared } memory total needed in the parameters initialization in tbmonitor that } would cause there to be a problem that we can't see. } } Are there any Unix shared memory configuration parameters that could } be affecting things. } } Any help would be greatly appreciated as we really don't see the point in } keeping three instances online that can only accept 10 users on each. } That's barely enough for the informix daemons and page cleaners.
