duplicating level0 archive tape
Posted in 2006

I need to duplicate a level 0 archive tape for an INFORMIX database. I
have two tape drives. What is the best method?
HPUX11.0
INFORMIX-OnLine Version 7.23.UC11
I currently use ontape in a backup program to make the tape, and it
takes several hours. I want to return to production and then use the
two tape drives to duplicate it via a UNIX command.
Any ideas?
For that matter, I want to do the same thing for our IGNITE tape. How
about that?
I tried the dd command:
dd if=/dev/rmt/0m of=/dev/rmt/1m
echo "$?"
I got a 0 return status, indicating a good copy, but the IGNITE
verification had massive discrepancies.
Thanks.
Rob
Block size. When you copy tapes you have to make certain that the physical
blocking of the tape is identical between the source and destination. So, if
you have TAPEBLOCK set to 256k then:
dd bs=256k if=/dev/rmt/0m of=/dev/rmt/1m

You may need to set the block size in the dd for both input (ibs=) and
output (obs=). How big do you expect the archive to be and was that volume
copied from 1 tape to the other?
More importantly, can you restore from the second tape? Don't think
anything else matters.

Thank you, Mr. Kagel. I'll give that a shot!
My onconfig shows:
LTAPEBLK 2048
# Log tape block size (Kbytes DDS-3 DAT)
LTAPESIZE 24000000
# Max amount of data to put on log tape (Kbytes DDS-3 DAT)
So I would use:
dd bs=2048kb if=/dev/rmt/0m of=/dev/rmt/1m
?
