Onconfig Parameter RESIDENT

Hello,
IDS 11.10.FC2W4 on Solaris 10, 16 Gb Ram.
I have set the onconfig parameter to RESIDENT -1 and SHMTOTAL 0.
knowing that shared-memory residency will be enforced for the resident as well
as virtual portion and will improve the performance.
onstat -g seg shows
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.10.FC2W4 -- On-Line -- Up 1 days

will all the newly added virtual protions also remain in physical RAM. IF yes
them may be i would face a memeory exaust issue on more virutal segment
addition.
--I can set RESIDENT to a value greater than 1 to indicate the number of
memory segments to stay in physical memory--
Does it means if i set RESIDENT 4 then along with Resident portion only 4
virtual segments (first 4 Vs ) would be pinned to Physical Ram?
Pls advice.
Regards
vikas.
IB that setting RESIDENT to 4 will make the resident segment and the first
three virtual segments (a total of 4) resident in memory.

Would setting the RESIDENT 1 be more practical approach with just 16 Gb Ram.
pls suggest

Given that your server is using 11.256GB of those 16GB of available RAM?
Maybe. Is there anything else of significance running on this system that
can't live happily in 5GB of memory? If yes, then just make the 8GB
resident segment memory resident, as you propose. If not, what are you
worried about? As long as you have at least 16GB of swap space available,
what can happen? If you are REALLY worried about crowding out the OS or
something similarly to be avoided, then set SHMTOTAL to 15GB and reserve 1GB
for other things.
Of course I have to wonder why a server with close to 8GB of buffer cache
and 2GB of initial virtual segment memory is adding another 2.256GB of
virtual segments after that. I'd look into that!
