replication exp in same pc
Posted in 2010
A user asked whether he could run two Informix instances on one PC to experiment with replication, and whether VMware/VirtualBox was needed. Replies said VMs aren't required: create a second ONCONFIG with different SERVERNUM, DBSERVERNAME/ALIASES and root dbspace, set ONCONFIG accordingly and add the names to sqlhosts (up to 256 servers per machine). ER and SDS work easily on one box; HDR/RSS needs relative chunk paths and starting oninit from the right directory. Links given to a planetids article and the IDS 11 Availability/Replication Redbook (Appendix A). The user then raised a separate, unanswered question about Fedora 12 not installing on his i5 machine.

Hi Debadatta, You can very well setup replication on single machine using relative paths on vmware. Please refer the below article for details on setup : http://www.planetids.com/content/running-mach11-single-machine Regards Ravi On Tue, May 11, 2010 at 12:24 PM, Debadatta Mishra <mishra.dd@gmail.com>wrote: > HI > > Is it possible anyway two create two servers installation on one pc. > > I wanted to test some replication as my own experiment and study part. > > how can i do that, can vmware or sun virtual box be used for that? > > -- > Thanks & Regards > Debadatta Mishra > > --001636284bfc62d54204864bfe35 > > > > ******************************************************************************* > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. > > --000e0cd1710866d74404864c8af7

Yes you can. Just set up another ONCONFIG file with a different SERVERNUM, DBSERVERNAME, DBSERVERALIASES, and ROOTDBS settings, put that filename into the ONCONFIG environment variable and add the new servernames into the sqlhosts file and you will be able to initialize and configure up to 256 servers (range of SERVERNUM is 0-255) on a machine without VMs. Art Art S. ER or MACH!1 (HDR/RSS/SDS) ?
Having ER on a single system is no problem. Same with SDS - simply map=
the
root path to the same file in both onconfigs.
HDR/RSS would require using relative path names. You'd need to make su=
re
that you're in the correct directory before running oninit.
