utils2_ak Make
Posted in 2008
Larry couldn't compile listdb7.ec from Art Kagel's utils2_ak toolkit, getting esqlc errors -33200/-33051 on CONNECT, INTO and CONNECTION. Art diagnosed the cause: Larry was using an ancient ESQL/C 5.20, which predates the CONNECT statement. Advice: if running OnLine 5.x, skip listdb7 and build listdb instead (commenting out the related makefile lines); otherwise download and install CSDK 3.50 and rebuild. Art noted the CSDK can go in its own directory (with a copy of sqlhosts in its etc) or over INFORMIXDIR, provided old ESQL 5.x executables are recompiled. Larry then hit a 'could not load wizard specified in /wizard.inf' error running installclientsdk, which is not resolved in the thread.

Art,
Here are the results from the compile attempt:

Weird! Works for me on Ubuntu Hardy Heron:
art@Galadriel-II:~/Desktop/Latest Art's Stuff$ INFORMIXC=gcc esql
-DHAVE_GNU_GETOPT=1 -o listdb7 listdb7.ec getopt.c
art@Galadriel-II:~/Desktop/Latest Art's Stuff$ ./listdb7
There are currently 5 databases available:
# Database/Table Name
=== =======================
1 art
2 sysadmin
3 sysmaster
4 sysuser
5 sysutils
What version of ESQL/C are you using? Please run:
esql -V
and post the output. Also post the output from:
head -20 listdb7.ec You should see an entry like:
Revision 1.19 2006/01/27 17:30:45 kagel
OK, this REALLY fixed the problem.
Revision 1.17 2003/10/13 17:06:45 kagel
FIxed compilation on Linux.
near the bottom of the listing. There was an old problem compiling that
file on Linux but was fixed a couple of versions ago.

AHHHHH!!! ESQL/C v 5.xx did not support the CONNECT verb, that's why you
are having trouble. I don't remember there ever being an esql/c v 5.20!
The last 5.xx specific esql/c that I remember was v 5.12 or 13 before it was
replaced by ESQL/C v6.01 and a year later with v7.10. Of course I'm getting
older ....
What version of the database engine are you running? If you are running
OnLine 5.xx then you don't need listdb7.ec anyway, it depends on features
not in OL5.xx, but the listdb.ec will work fine with that server. Just
comment out the lines in the makefile that depend on listdb7.ec.
If you are running IDS 7.xx, 9.xx, 10.00, or 11.xx you shouldn't be using
such an old ESQL/C compiler anyway.
You will not be able to compile most of the rest of the package either with
that old version of ESQL/C. You will have to download the CSDK v 3.50 (the
latest) from the IBM web site and install it in a separate directory from
the database engine. Put a copy of the sqlhosts file into the etc
subdirectory under where you've installed the CSDK and you'll be able to run
my tools (once they are compiled) from that directory tree.

Art,
Thanks for your response. I am not sure how I got a hold of such an old
ESQL/C. As far as installing into a directory separate from the engine, is
that just a recommendation or does it have to be installed in a separate
directory? Are you just saying this so that the engine libraries will not be
clobbered with the install?

Art,
I have downloaded CSDK 3.50.UC1 and UC1 for linux. When I run the
installclientsdk for either, I get the following message:
The wizard cannot continue because of the following error: could not load
wizard specified in /wizard.inf (104)
Any suggestions?

As long as you install an SDK at least as recent as the engine itself the
libraries are safe, so you CAN install over the existing instance and ESQL.
Just a suggestion in case you didn't want to have to recompile any existing
ESQL source since the new shared libraries are definitely not compatible
with the older ESQL 5.xx executables. If you are not using ESQL/C for
anything but utilities and there aren't so many as to make rebuilding them
all a burden, feel free and safe installing into the existing INFORMIXDIR.
Prudence suggests doing so during off hours but otherwise it should be
painless and harmless.
