Re: Fastest Informix DBA Contest at the IIUG Conference
Posted in 2009
Folks, I just received the iPod Touch for the winner of this contest today. I am really excited in the interest and response to this we have received. A couple of notes from questions folks asked. The Informix version for the benchmark is IDS 11.50 uc3, but anyone with the basic DBA performance skills in 9, 10 , 11 (and even 7) should be able to make a difference. It will be run in a Vmware image on a quad core HP, running Suse Linux so we can easily reset the test. It is based on the lab exercises I use in my Advanced Performance Tuning Class where students have taken it from a 40 minute job down to 2-3 minutes just by changing the onconfig file, dbspace layout and a few simple changes to the SQL. But, I have re-written it so that students from my class will not have a advantage, (well maybe). And it will be fun. Hope to see as many of you as possible in Kansas City at the IIUG conference. The challenge is to take a basic Informix database server and a SQL script that takes about 30 minutes to run, and see who can get it to run the fastest. Can you take a new Informix install and, without any prior knowledge, optimize it in 30 minutes? > > There will be 10 winners in the following categories (Grand Prize will be an iPod Touch): > > CATEGORIES: > Grand Prize - Fastest User DBA. To qualify for this prize, the user must be 1) a paid attendee at the conference (or conference speaker or volunteer, at discretion of the judges), 2) not a consultant, 3) not an IBM employee, and 4) employed by a company using Informix internally. > > Honorary Prize - Fastest Professional Consultant DBA > Honorary Prize - Fastest IBM Developer (IBM employee) > Honorary Prize - Fastest Senior DBA (over 50) > Honorary Prize - Fastest Mid-Aged DBA (30-50) > Honorary Prize - Fastest Youngest DBA (under 30) > Honorary Prize - Fastest Newest DBA (shortest experience with Informix) > Honorary Prize - Fastest Old-timer (longest experience with Informix) > Honorary Prize - Fastest International DBA (Non USA resident) > Honorary Prize - Fastest Domestic DBA (USA resident) > > The challenge will be to complete the following tasks in under 30 minutes: > - Tune and optimize the Onconfig file > - Tune the optimize dbspace/table layout > - Tune the optimize SQL script > - Run the script > > The rules: > - Must be in attendance at the IIUG Informix Conference > - The row and data counts at the end of the SQL process must be correct. > - Must make an appointment at the Advanced DataTools booth to enter in the contest. > - All work must be done at the booth; no copies (usb, email) of the scripts will be allowed. > - Each participant will have 30 minutes to review and optimize the server and SQL code on a machine provided. > - Each participant will be monitored by an Advanced DataTools Consultant. > - Each participant's configuration will be saved and the results must be reproducible by the judges. > > Judges: > - Lester Knutsen > - Art Kagel > - Carlton Doe > (The judges' role will be to review the results, arbitrate any disagreement(s), and have final say.) > > More information will be available on our web site soon! -- ______________________________________________________________________ Lester Knutsen lester@advancedatatools.com Advanced DataTools Corporation Voice: 703-256-0267 x102 Visit our Web page: http://www.advancedatatools.com ______________________________________________________________________
