Yes you installed esql in a separate directory structure from the engine. They MUST be installed together and the ESQL MUST be installed first. Follow Nils' instructions TO THE LETTER! In brief: create the informix installation directory, cd into it, export INFORMIXDIR=$PWD, put this definition in you .profile, as root untarthe esqlc tar file WHILE cd'd into $INFORMIXDIR, run the install script for esql, untar the SE tar file WHILE cd'd into $INFORMIXDIR, run the install script for SE.
