services file is a database to map service names to service port numbers. So, the fact that you have this database on your Unix server doesn't help much the programs on the client computer. Of course, you can use the service number in the SERVICE field while you are configuring the client (ODBC or SetNet) and in this case you don't need to change the \\windows\\system32\\drivers\\etc\\services file. Octav, now your making sense to me. i did not realise the clients need service entries locally as well as the unix server. it works now perfectly ! thanks to all for help cheers noel Octav Chiriac <com@netinfo-moldova.com> wrote in message news:7tfjp3$67v$1@news.xmission.com... > > services file is a database to map service names to service port numbers. > So, the fact that you have this database on your Unix server doesn't > help much the programs on the client computer. > Of course, you can use the service number in the SERVICE field while > you are configuring the client (ODBC or SetNet) and in this case > you don't need to change the \\windows\\system32\\drivers\\etc\\services > file. > > Hope this helps, > Octav > > On Wed, Oct 06, 1999 at 12:47:49PM +0100, Noel O'Brien wrote: > > Bashar thanks.. > > > > a few people have pointed me to \\windows\\system32\\drivers\\etc\\services > > > > but what has the clients services ( nt ) got to do with the odbc driver ? > > > > the database server is on Sco openserver 5.04 with SE 7 and > > there are service entries here in /etc/services > > > > cheers > > noel > > > > Bashar Chalabi <bashar@ctl.com> wrote in message > > news:vprK3.352$xa4.3805@news.colt.net... > > > > do i need to get informix-net, informix-connect , informix client > > > > or informix-client-sdk ? > > > > > > I didn't know i-net still existed.
