Set Lock to Wait ???

I don't know what I am doing wrong way, but I am trying to use the SELECT FOR UPDATE statement (using the informix jdbc driver) and I need the wait "on". It is not working, my select doesn't wait a single second, I don't know how to fix it. Could anybody help me ?.
