Setting up a remote tape device for ONTAPE usage

I know this subject has been documented before.
I have been successful in setting up and writing to a remote tape device. I
am able to copy files using tar and/or cpio command, but when I attempt to
use the ONTAPE commands: ontape -s ontape -c these backups fail.
It can not see the tape device.
I have the tape device variables set in ONCONFIG file:
Logical Log Tape Device <server name>:/dev/rmt/0m
Archive Tape Device " "
Is there a ONTAPE command line I can use for this?????
Thanks,
Tim

Tim. We had the same setup and it worked fine (IDS 7.23). I think your
problem is the rshd permissions. make sure the user that is running the
ontape command (informix?) have an .rhosts in his home directory on both
(!) computers that you are running. Assuming the tape is on
tapeserver.yourdomain.com and informix is running on
dbserver.yourdomain.com you need to have user "informix" on both machines
and the .rhosts (or /etc/hosts.equiv) for these users should be:
tapeserver: ~informix/.rhosts:
dbserver
dbserver.yourdomain.com
dbserver: ~informix/.rhosts:
tapeserver
tapeserver.yourdoamin.com
hope this helps.

Is the server a trusted host on the remote machine which owns the tape
device? Informix uses rsh to run a dd on the remote which is directed to
read from stdin and write to the tape device. You need to be a trusted
host to do this. In trying to debug and fix this just do as Informix does
and cat a file to and rsh running a cat or dd to a file and if you can get
that
working the ontapes should work also. Also note that changing
LTAPEDEV directly in the onconfig does not take effect until the server is
bounced. To change it live you have to use onmonitor (TAPEDEV can
be changed manually and takes effect immediately, however).
