Online Archiving - Not? - follow up
Posted in 1993
Blair and netters, I posted a query on Online Archiving locking up the other day. We tracked it down to this, I am sending this note to Blair who asked the following and following it up to the Net. > Lockup problem? > During arcvhive - the archive process is running 'critical sections' of code every so often. There are many of these, but there are breaks between these sections - the critical sections generally don't last more than 5 - 10 minutes. When a checkpoint is required, it has to wait until all transactions have completed critical sections of code (to wit - archive). So you get a potential 5-10 minute lockup. Each user who tries to do anything during this time gets a checkpoint wait (the chkp_wait counter bumps by 80 or so at these times), normally this is not too big a problem - when the operator doesn't realize they need to change the tape for an hour or so (which is what occured Mon and Tue) - the entire engine is locked down. Mike has a couple of potential solutions and is working on them - I told him to keep in touch with you. j. _____________________________________________________________________________ Jack Parker - Contractor | Hewlett Packard, BSMC Boise, Idaho, USA| If you keep staring at it like that, jparker@hpbs2561.boi.hp.com | your nose is going to grow (208) 323-5388 (W) (208) 384-1623 (H) | into the bark. ^^^ 396 as of 6:30am April 29th _____________________________________________________________________________
