Help with ISQL perform screen

Is there a way in an ISQL perform screen (2.10 soon to upgrade to 4.1) to select a field but not display the results and to update the same field but not display what is being typed and have it verify join with another table? I need this in a database for security purposes. I have tried playing with field level permissions but ISQL will not allow me to even use a form with a field that does not have select permissions. Am I making myself clear? Sort of like what happens when you type a password on a computer. Any information good or bad would be of great help.
