Is there such as thing in Informix: "database" lev
Posted in 2013
The poster asked whether Informix can replicate a single database rather than a whole instance (as HDR does). Responders agreed the answer is Enterprise Replication (ER/CDR): define replicates for all tables in the database, optionally grouped in replicate sets. Khaled outlined the steps (smart blobspace, ONCONFIG and SQLHOSTS setup, cdr define server, primary keys or ERKEYs, create/start replicates, initial sync, logged database) and suggested an alternative of putting the database alone in its own instance and using HDR/RSS/SDS. Art noted ER is too involved to explain in a post, and a link to a developerWorks article on setting up ER via OpenAdmin Tool was provided. A later reply pointed out ER works only between separate instances.

We all know instance level replication has been available for a long time, what about just to replicate one database? Thank you in advance for the info. Regards
That is what ER or Entreprise Replication is for. You can replicate all or part of the data of any table or all tables in a database between as many nodes as you want. See the Administrator's Guide, Administrator's Reference, and the Enterprise Replication Guide for details. Art Art S. Assume you only care Data, then A option is ER all tables of the database? you could use CDR to replicate all the tables in the database. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Kern Doe" <kern_doe@yahoo.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2013 2:40 PM To: <ids@iiug.org> Subject: Is there such as thing in Informix: "database".... 1. You CAN use ER to replicate all of the tables of a database. 2. You can isolate a database by itself in an instance and use HDR or any other replication such as RSS or SDS Khaled Bentebal de mon portable Le 22 janv. 2013 à 20:40, "Kern Doe" <kern_doe@yahoo.com> a écrit : > We all know instance level replication has been available for a long time, > what about just to replicate one database? > Thank you in advance for the info. > Regards > > > ******************************************************************************* > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. >
SO0oo.. "ER" is the solution. How? simple examples please! I don't want to go read 159 pages on the ER manual yet... ________________________________ From: Khaled BENTEBAL <khaled.bentebal@consult-ix.fr> To: ids@iiug.org Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2013 3:05 PM Subject: Re: Is there such as thing in Informix: "datab.... Too many steps to explain here. Not as simple as HDR or RSS. You're going to have to read up. Art Art S. Hi Kern, 1/ What I meant is that ER is the Informix way to replicate a single a table in a database. You can generalize it to all of the tables in that database. It requires some knowledge of ER. Not as easy as HDR but not that complicated . You need to go thru some steps to : - need a smart blobspace - ajust some onconfig parameters needed by ER - prepare the SQLHOSTS file for ER - define the servers that will use ER: cdr define server ... - check if you have primary keys or not. If not you need to ass primary keys to all of the tables in your database or ERKEYs (available in 11.70 only). - create replicates ; may need replicate sets to group tables. - start the replicates or replicate sets - you may need to sync the tables intially (in order to have both databases that you want to replicate at the same level in terms of contents) You need to script all of this to generate what is needed for all of the tables in your systables. This is a very quick view of what is needed. You need to go thru the documentation and some testing. 2/ The other solution I proposed is to use HDR by creating just your database in an instance by itself. That way your database is replicated easily; of course all of the systems databases: sysadmin, sysutils, ... will also be replicated with it but the most important thing is your database from what I gather. Your database has to be in log mode of course: requirement both for HDR and ER. I hope that this helps. Hi Kern, Here's an article on setting up ER with OpenAdmin Tool (OAT). The Templates section has an example on replicating one database. http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-1003idsopenadmin/i ndex.html Regards, Sumanth. Hi Art, Replication(CR) is only possible between databases of different instances. Its not possible to replicate between the databases within same instance. rgds schillache
Nonsequitur, does not compute! You are correct, however, my first comment is: when did the OP (Kern) state that he wanted to replicate one database to another in the same instance? My second comment is not directed just to you but to many posters: PLEASE! When you respond to a posting, include enough context from the original post or the reply that you are commenting on in your response that someone will know what you are commenting on! Most of us IB do not use the forum browser or Google Groups to follow the forums, we use email and delete postings once we have read them so we don't have the threads to follow. Normally when I read a post without history in it, if I don't remember the original post I just delete it without reading it in full and certainly without responding. In this case, since it seems I was being accused of forgetting something important (I'm getting older so it's possible) I had to go back to the forum browser to find the thread which took a few minutes since it was back three weeks ago. So, again, PLEASE include context when you respond to a post! Art Art S.
