The logic of a report expects to be able to write the complete report without running into problems like running out of disk space, or in the case of a piped report, without the receiver dying before the report is complete. When you abandon the report on page 1 inside 'pg', you are violating this expectation, and the error -1324 is an indication that a write from the report failed. >>the manual says check for disk full, but it isn't... >>any hints.... >>online 5 on dynix/ptx 1.4 >> >It has been my understanding for several years now that this is expected >behavior for what you are trying to do. That may have changed (I believe >my information dates back to about 1992). An alternative would be to run >the report to a file and then pg the file. This is often an alternative. Depending on how big the reports are, you may also be able to use REPORT TO PIPE "tee /dev/null | pg" which gives you about 5kB of pipe buffer leading to tee, another 5kB leading to 'pg' plus whatever buffering tee does internally. If your report is less than 10kB, this will stop you getting that error; it's no help if the report is megabytes long. Additionally, if you have 4.14 or 6.02, you should scrutinize the release notes. And while you're doing that, note that there are new statements TERMINATE REPORT and EXIT REPORT which can be used to terminate reports. You use TERMINATE REPORT as an alternative to FINISH REPORT, and doing so cancels any further output -- or all output if the report is a 2-phase report. You use EXIT REPORT inside the report itself. After either of these statements is executed, no further operations are valid on the report until you do a START REPORT. Note that you should not use RETURN inside a report. Also note that all interactive statements (INPUT, INPUT ARRAY, DISPLAY ARRAY, PROMPT, MENU, (...?)) are now forbidden inside a report. Previously they were mostly forbidden but not completely so. There are no restrictions on the functions called from within a report -- though don't ever try doing an OUTPUT TO REPORT xyz call from within a function called within report xyz.
