It's still sold, it's still supported and it's still very widely used indeed. It's also very much been available on Linux for years. However, I think it's very, very unlikely it will ever be enhanced. If it's doing what you want, then I wouldn't be too concerned about it's future. Oh, and you're paying for support, not for new features. ;o) What version of SE are you using? -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com I will now proceed to pleasure myself with this fish. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.
You asked for: A short paper from someone who has intimate knowledge about Informix history since it was sold to IBM. The focus is on Informix SE 7.x, nothing else, since we have no budget for IDS. We need impartial opinion about the demise of SE 7, the failed attempt to port it to Linux, and what next for this particular engine.. First, there was/is no 'demise of SE 7'. Informix Standard Engine 7.xx is alive and well. Ibm is still maintaining it and selling it and supporting it! Only IDS 7.31 went out of support this past September, not SE. As far as I know there are no plans to enhance it but then it is a stable and fast product and there are no major upgrades that are really needed. It would be nice to have SQL '92 support in there so that IDS queries can port better down to SE, but it's been running with only SQL '89 syntax support forever, so... SE is fast, light weight, takes almost no administration except changing log files periodically if you are logging your databases, and it just keeps on working. As Jonathan said, SE is a stable product that just works, with no features enhancements planned. If it offers all the features you need you should just stick with it, if you need more, IDS workgroup edition compares favourably with SE in terms of licences. -- Ciao, Marco ______________________________________________________________________________ Marco Greco /UK /IBM Standard disclaimers apply!
