Anonymous FTP problem

I have *almost* setup anonymous FTP on one of our machines. I can log in but am unable to get anything back from (e.g.) 'DIR' as in the following sample output: v3.1> ftp 4gldev Connected to 4gldev. 220 4gldev FTP server (UNIX(r) System V Release 4.2) ready. Name (4gldev:sally): ftp 331 Guest login ok, send ident as password. Password: 230 Guest login ok, access restrictions apply. ftp> dir 200 PORT command successful. 425 Can't create data socket (0.0.0.0,20): Bad file number. ftp> quit 221 Goodbye. v3.1> The platform running the ftp is an ICL Teamserver 7MPlus.9.8. I followed the instructions as per the 'man ftpd' output.
