: Notice I have 7CUPVP's but vp 8 seems to be doing all the work. ANYONE : know what the heck is going on. : I just happen to notice this one day. I have been suffering from poor : performance since the upgrade from 7.13 but I can't quit figure out what : the problem is. i have heard of this before, performance problems going to 7.22. i am about to begin an evaluation to determine if we want to upgrade or not. as far as the vp's, it's the other way around. vp8 is doing much less work than the others. when the vp has nothing to do, it goes into a spin, and will spin for a set number of times, say 1000. if it finds something to do before it finishes that 1000th spin, that is a busy wait. if it doesn't find anything to do, that is a semop, in other words, it did 1000 spins and still found nothing to do. since you are seeing that many spins on that vp, that suggests that it isn't doing as much work as the others, as it is getting into a spin situation in the first place. now if there are poll threads on a cpuvp, then it will almost never spin, because it if has nothing else to do, it will give it's attention to the poll thread, and so will never see the spin situation. as far as your performance, can't do much without really seeing your system, but i might be in the same boat soon. mickm Mickey Mestel mickm@netcom.com -on a beach in thailand to a beautiful, stoned, norwegian woman: "..yeah, it's just another foreign country without ice." -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
