Onspaces Segmentation fault
Posted in 2006
After reinstalling IDS 10.00.UC4 on SUSE 9, the instance initialized and came online, but onspaces (and later oncheck, ontape, onmonitor) died with a segmentation fault. Suggestions included checking for stale shared-memory segments (ipcs -m), SHMMAX and other kernel parameters, and whether other Informix products or old paths/environment variables interfered. The poster found the cause himself: the hostname entry in sqlhosts. Replacing the server/host name with the literal IP address made all the on* utilities work (an FQDN had not helped). Why the earlier install worked with the name was never explained.

Hi all,
I have just finished reinstalling my IDS 10 for linux, on suse 9 for
workgroup. I initialized the DB instance nicely (oninit -iv) the rootdbs plus
its mirror was created fine.
But when i type onspaces (with or without the parameters), puff!!! the thing
throws "Segmentation Error". Any ideas?
PS: My first installation was working perfectly on the same hardware and OS.
My online.log reads like this:

Did you check dead/detached memoty segments (ipcs -m) ? Also, SHMMAX kernel
parameter ?
Did you reboot the system and tried onspaces ?

Did you check your Linux kernel parameters ?
Compare them with the other installation and/or the release notes.
I don't know in SUSE but in Red Hat they are in the /etc/sysctl.conf file.

Did you reinstall IDS on the same directory ? If not, could any environment variable be still referencing the old directory ? Did you install another IDS product (like 4gl, isql, etc) ? Database engine must be the last one to be installed. Anyway, check kernel parameters against release notes. Just in case. Victor,
When i Uninstalled IDS i even removed user informix plus his home directory
where i had installed IDS, and when i reinstalled back i placed it under the
same directory structure ( /home/informix ).
I did't install any other products, i used a straight installation process on
the IDS 10 CD (java installation - ids_install .
Did i mention to you that i have another server with the same specs and setup
and it's running perfectly!
PS: I had a bit of a hiccup during installation, the IDS was unable to resolve
the server name in the (/home/informix/etc/sqlhosts) file, i had to give it an
absolute IP address for it to accept! Later on i went and changed a value in
the /etc/nsmatch.conf file which i guess hold values on the way suse resolves
ip address and server names, then went and changed back my
(/home/informix/etc/sqlhosts)to have the server name, and when i oninit'ed, it
worked...
any hints?
by the way most of the oncommands are not working they are throwing the same
error, eg. oncheck -pe, ontape, onmonitor etc
Paul
Happy New Year!
I finally managed to fix this problem "Segmentation Fault", i reallized that
if i use the server name in the sqlhosts file then for reasons that i don't
know am unable to run most of the commands (onspaces, ontape, onmonitor etc),
but if i replace the server name and actuall IP address then everything works
perfectly!!!
Now that everything is working and am able to create my spaces, can someone
explain to me why the first IDS installation was able to work with the server
name? and this second installation can only worki with absolute IP address!!!!
Informix developers please assist on this one.
Thanks
Paul

So, what is in your sqlhosts file - and what is set in
$INFORMIXSERVER, and what example command lines fail. On Linux, you
may need to use the FQDN (fully-qualified domain name -
machine.subdomain.domain.tld - in the sqlhosts file.

What works? What doesn't?

On sqlhosts file i have the absolute IP address (182.23.x.x), while on the
$INFORMIXSERVER i have the actual db instance name which is different from the
actual machine name.
Earlier on i had tried to place the FQDN which is in the /etc/HOSTNAME file
but still it refused to work!
Commands like onspaces, ontape, onmonitor could not work, till i changed to an
absolute IP address on the sqlhosts file !!!
But still i don't understand why it worked on the first installation and on
the second reinstallation it failed!
Thanks
