(It does use CORBA but i do not yet know exactly how. It can also be used with only RMI). The web site info is thin, but is promissed to become better within two weeks or so. I have forwarded some posts from a java group where I discussed with them a little. If you are interested in this may be you could take a look and comment further here in c.d.i. if you have the time. You can also get an evaluation of CocoBase at no cost. Forte is (or was at least) kind of expensive. (Their idea of a percentage of my application price as runtime payment was especially repugnant.) It also don't give us other advantages of Java which are many. :>:Their VJ++ tool and :>:AFC class library shows that they are taking Java seriously although :>:surprisingly, VJ++ can't produce a Windows EXE (yet). : :>I wouldn't touch the AFC class library if it can at all be avoided. :>This may be made into the major attack on Java and it's portability by :>Microsoft. : :Yes. That is why they are serious about Java. In 5 years time, they :want the average programmer to think that Java comes from them not :Sun. Yes and the problem is realy serious. The AFC looks nice indeed from the spesifications (but to everybody - please don't use it). The IFC from Netscape have very few and only basic interface design elements although it's said to be well implemented. AWT from Javasoft is all but useless. It seems the Unix gurus don't yet understand the importance of a high quality GUI toolkit for the developers. Control over that gives control over the programmers, then easily over both the language and which platforms it runs on. Any help in making Javasoft understand this would be greatly appreciated. It's possible to both mail them and take part in Java news groups or other forums. Javasoft have to understand this within the next few months and do something serious about it. They have every oportunity if they want to. Nils.Myklebust@idg.no NM Data AS, P.O.Box 9090 Gronland, N-0133 Oslo, Norway My opinions are those of my company The Informix FAQ is at http://www.iiug.org
