David, Thank you for the solution. I researched what the "-c" option does and it's apparently a directive to the c compiler. My system documentation tells me it causes the compiler to behave as follows: "Suppress the linking phase of the compilation; save the object files." What is the net effect of compiling in this fashion? Will it harm anything when I compile this object with my other C & Fortran programs? Also, do you have a guess on why I didn't have to compile this way to begin with? It's people like you who help me remain employed/employable, and I am, as always, deeply appreciative.
