Informix is commited to providing DOS and MS/Windows PC front ends, both its own, and from 3rd parties, that connect to Informix Unix servers. From Informix: -------------- Informix is working on its 4.1 PC release, due in Q2 '92. This release is anticipated in 2 phases as follows:- EARLY Q2 '92 Windows-compliant client/server 4.1 development tools release: ESQL/C, Inet PC, and ISQL - allows development to remote engine (UNIX or NetWare) using Informix tools listed above - provides commercially-available Informix technology such that 3rd party tools vendors can release their links as they become available (further updates on 3rd party plans will be issued as we receive info from the vendors concerned) - allows for application deployment to client/server configurations - allows for deployment on both DOS and MS/Windows client stations - supports both DOS and MS/Windows environments LATE Q2 '92 Windows-compliant 4.1 DOS local engine and C-ISAM release: Informix SE for DOS/Windows, C-ISAM - allows for both development and application deployment on standalone PCs and on DOS file sharing LANS - supports both DOS and MS/Windows environments DEGREE OF WINDOWS SUPPORT These products all support both MS/Windows and vanilla DOS (DOS without windows) environments. ESQL/C will provide full windows applications support. It can be interfaced to third-party tools such that the 3rd party provides the GUI interface and ESQL/C provides the interface to the Informix database. Both ESQL/C and INET PC are being used by our 3rd parties to interface their client/server tools to our engines (eg Gupta, Powersoft). Informix developers can also create their applications through using GUI development tools such as Asymetrix Toolbook to write their screen interfaces and ESQL/C to interact with the Informix database. ISQL will provide Windows Aware support. It will run as a character-based application under Windows, and will take over the full screen. This is known as "full screen mode", and provides MS/Windows compatibility without a GUI look and feel. WINGZ is already available. Informix also has further tools under development specifically to support GUI platforms. These tools are unannounced as yet - watch for announcements from Informix on these tools throughout 1992. From 3rd parties: ----------------- Many PC tools are already available from Informix partners. Techgnosis is one partner that provides connections to many of the popular PC tools. They are the people working now on interfacing Visual Basic. Their projected delivery on this is Q1 '92. Contact Techgnosis at 407-997-6687 for details of their tools solutions. Another partner with a currently shipping Windows tool is Uniface - contact them at 415-748-6145. Other companies working on Windows interfaces are Gupta (SQL Windows, Quest) and Powersoft (Powerbuilder). Gupta and Powersoft plan releases of their interfaces to co-incide with the Informix 4.1 releases in Q2 '92. Ask your Informix representative for a copy of the InSync Marketing Partners Catalog for a full listing of 3rd party partners.
