It is a bit annoying, isn't it?
What I do is to select my unions into a temp table, then select back
out from the temp table, this time ordering by the column name. Then
it works.
eg
[...]
select last_name, [....]
from kith
union
select surname, [....]
from kin
into temp kith_and_kin ;
# The first column in temp table "kith_and_kin" is named "last_name",
# although both "last_name" and "surname" data go into it.
select last_name, [.....]
from kith_and_kin
order by last_name
end
format
before group of last_name
print last_name;
on every row
print [.....]
[...]
