That kind of tools do have a difficult time, and that will only become more so as time passis. Some will survive for quite some time, but I would be sceptical as to their future development as you are. >Java isn't ready for this that I can >see. This I don't understand. Java is now used in small applications as well as in major enterprice type applications. We use it ourselves and it works great. The best development tools seems to be Symantec Visual Cafe and IBM Visual Age for Java. We use the latter. One area where Java is still lacking some is in the type of reports you can so easily do with 4GL. We will do a lot to find effecitve solutions to that within the next months. Don't hold your breath for anything we do though. There are reporting tools out there that you can use. > What would be a (gasp) safe choice right now? The only way I know of keeping the 4GL report writing capability is to use 4GL. Via Dynamic 4GL now awailable from Informix you can run your programs on Windows NT with a GUI front end. Might be something to look at.
