Re: Why Informix is Best
Posted in 2005
John Carlson remarked that DB2 gets little press either. Captain Pedantic described puzzling IBM boxing-glove adverts in the UK. Serge Rielau said they were part of an IBM software group SOA campaign and compared databases to car batteries, needed but not advertised. Captain Pedantic called it pretentious. Off-topic banter; no technical content.

Here in England throughout the summer IBM took out a full-page advert for DB2 UDB v8 in all of the top-selling IT weeklies. These have been replaced recently by a series of very puzzling, brand-based ads in which supposedly ordinary (but actually all very beautiful, and scrupulously ethnically diverse) people in ordinary work situations are pictured wearing boxing gloves. Somebody in "creative" has over-done it on the charlie I think ...!

I think the first campaign I remember that ever mentioned DB2 must have been the "Codernauts". IMHO IBM sees RDBMS like batteries in a car. You need them, you want a good one, but they don't belong into the ad for the car. Hmm... I wonder what VW would say if Bosch asked or a "Bosch inside" sticker (and a catchy jingle).... It's still pretentious bollocks though ...
