Alarm for New virtual shared memory segment
Posted in 2010
Dave asked whether Informix could alert when it dynamically allocates a new virtual shared memory segment, since ALARMPROGRAM was not triggered. Art Kagel said it is not an alarm event and the only way is to poll the message log. Superboer suggested keeping one virtual segment and checking onstat -g seg or sysseglst. Dave said he would build another monitor and file a feature request.

Hello,
I was wondering if there is any way for Informix to alert us if it
"Dynamically allocated new virtual shared memory segment". I tried
getting the ALARMPROGRAM to alert, though it seems that this action
does not trigger the ALARMPROGRAM. Any ideas?
16:17:26 Requested shared memory segment size rounded from 640000KBto 655360KB
16:17:26 Shared memory segment will use large pages with intimateshared memory (ISM) if available
16:17:27 Dynamically allocated new virtual shared memory segment
(size 655360KB)
16:17:27 Memory sizes:resident:9961472 KB, virtual:20185088 KB, noSHMTOTAL limit

Unfortunately it is not considered a significant "event" for the
alarmprogram. The only way would be to poll the message log for the string.

i would make sure only one segment for virtual and use
onstat -g segor
dbaccess sysmaster <<!
select * from sysseglst!
to check if extra were added

Thank you Superboer and Art. For the meantime I will create another
monitor. I have also submitted a feature request to get this event to
trigger the ALARMPROGRAM.
