HP-UX/Informix/SAP R3 Query

We're an established MVS maimframe site running IDMS & DB2 databases. We're just about to install an HP9000 series 800 running HP-UX version 9 and Informix database software to run SAP R3 HR module. This is our first step into the Unix world. Does anyone have any tips and suggestions to help us on our way? We're especially keen to learn if we're going to need to equip ourselves with Informix and HP-UX skills as well as SAP. The SAP people would have us believe not - however, we'd kind of like to hear that (or not) from some 'real world' people rather than the salesman! Also whether we need to define all our users to HP_UX or if it can all be done through SAP. For our sins, myself and 2 others have the job of getting this up and running. I've just attended the HP-UX fundamentals course and my colleague is on a SAP intro course at present. The hardware arrives 1 May. Any help/advice/encouragement will be gratefully received.
