Alternatively a cheaper (if less elegant option) is to create files which
simulate user interaction (not sure how to simulate coffee spills etc
though). To do this try
$ tee somefilename | program (ie xxx.4ge)
This runs the program and captures the input into the file "somefilename".
Use Interrupt to end the tee session.
create a new file ie filename.run and put in it
echo "the string from somefilename"
Now to run you just do
$ filename.run |program (ie xxx.4ge)
If you want to monitor the performance you can use time ie
$ time filename.run |xxx.4ge
To simulate alot of users simply put the above into a script with a loop.
It's quick it's dirty(ish) but it doesn't cost $100K and it does highlight
any major performance issues
Cheers,
Chris.
Ps those with better shell skills than me will probably improve on the
above.

I worked on benchmarks and used the following
Mercury Loadrunner
Performix
Rational Prevue
The way it works is that you can record ( capture ) a session of an
application ,
the replay it by # of users , the scripts are written in a "C" like language
, usually
you have to populate you dbs with pattern data and then you make the scripts
generate the keys within the range of your data pattern .
It allows not only to test you db performance but also your app performance
,
data contention and the hardware itself .
I know that Prevue also supports driect ODBC like connections to push
SQL's to the dbs .
All those tools are very expensive , easy to spent 100K + on a benchmark .
