InformixStar communication protocol

We use two HP servers, one as application server (with sqlexec processes), and second as DB OnLine v5 server (with sqlturbo processes). I know they communicate through some service port (I know which). But what is the protocol ? Is it some kind of sql (readable queries and answers), or is it any special protocol ? Is there any document about it on the web ?
