instance copy

HI,
A customer has about 6.6TB real user data, IDS version is 11.5 , and I want to
copy the data to another testing instance, the customer can't use disk mirror
technology. the two box has 10GB network adapter, Informix has below method,
from your experience, which one is more quickly.
1) ontape with STDIO,
2) remote query
3) onbar/ISM backup to a NFS file system, and do restore in the target machine.
and could anybody share the best practice doing the backup using onbar with
ISM?
thanks for your time.
Ontape or onbar would be the fastest of those you mention. Or you can use
the ifxclone utility which would probably be fastest of all.

Slow as it works with a single thread. Can't be paralell.

Can be run in parallell but data consistency will be an issue. Additionally
the target database would have to use the same logging mode as the source,
which for logged databases means less efficiency on the copy side (write)
3) onbar/ISM backup to a NFS file system, and do restore in the target

If you can get good performance from the NFS this would be the best option.

I'm not the right person to help you with ISM. It has been deprecated for
many years and I haven't used it. I believe it has a limit of 4 "devices"
so try to configure it with that number of files in the data pool.
It would be bettwe to do a whole system backup (-w). That will avoid the
need of logical recovery and since 11.x it can be done in parallel

Ontape is the easiest, but you have ifxclone, ER and HPL as well

For the last migration to new hardware I simply setup the target as an HDR secondary , and eventually flipped primary/secondary. It worked fine although it was across slow small pipes so the initial archive push took ~30 hours. The logical log syncing was very fast even when there were 10,000+ logical logs to sync (due to the long archive time). Sounds like you just want a copy so the flipping would be unnecessary. You would just break HDR (on purpose) and establish the secondary as a stand-alone engine. ifxclone isn't available with 11.5 (unless it got back ported and I missed it). Make sure RESTARTABLE_RESTORE is set to ON on both sides so the initial restore can restart from where it left off. Thanks - Mark Scranton The Mark Scranton Group "All Informix ...
