A piece of advice with stored procedures and INFORMIX - try to limit the body of the stored procedure as much as possible to SQL statements. If you place too much program logic in the stored procedure your performance will slide. The idea here is that the client machines take care of program logic (if..thens, etc..) while the stored procedures act as conduits for executing SQL statements. Hence, if you know the structure of your SQL ahead of time SPL makes sense. But if you are writing code that dynamically builds different SQL statements, then stored procedures are probably not the way to go.
