HPUX 11.0 Informix 9.40.FC4 Hello all, I support the Informix database which uses Baan. The Instance is around 350Gb in size and the level 0 backup is taking around 6-7 hrs a night to run. The customer has requested we investigate the possibility of moving 1 baan company (70Gb of read only data) out of the main database and placing it into it's own database within the same Informix instance. The primary motive for doing this is to reduce the Level 0 backup time by backing up the new database separatly. The data within the moved company will be read only which would only need to be backed up for disaster recovery reasons. The question I need clarifying is would this be possible to restore the main live database or would the presence of the separate database cause problems? Cheers, Howard

Is there any reason you cant move this one company(read-only) to a separate Informix Instance? My suggestion would be to move this company to a separate instance. This approach will help you reduce the backup/restore time on the production environment and you can separately manage the read-only instance. AllanF

What archive mechanism are you using? Do you have slow disks? If archiving to tape, what type of tape and what is the block size? Even taking 70Gb out of the instance will still likely leave an archive of over 5 hours. I think you need to look elsewhere first as you will potentially get better gains for less workand disruption. We also have BaaN (IVc4) and Informix (7.31), 170 chunks of 2GB in 5 companies. Every company has its own dbspace, all in 1 instance. In BaaN company 000 contains the company independant data. We have a separate company to do archiving. It has its own instance, 110 chunks of 2GB. But the company 000 is in the other instance. Backup and restore can be done seperately but maybe the data isn't consistent with the company 000 if you are restoring an old tape. FYI: we use the HP Ultrium 960 (LTO 400/800GB) to backup, it takes 90 minutes (during low activity) to take a level 0 of the 340GB database. Hope this helps, Daniel <howie.lfc@googlemail.com> wrote in message news:14c7f9b2-b86b-44f5-85d2-c3304e84e5ae@y18g2000pre.googlegroups.com... > HPUX 11.0 > Informix 9.40.FC4 > Hello all, > I support the Informix database which uses Baan. > The Instance is around 350Gb in size and the level 0 backup is taking > around 6-7 hrs a night to run. > > The customer has requested we investigate the possibility of moving 1 > baan company (70Gb of read only data) out of the main database and > placing it into it's own database within the same Informix instance. > The primary motive for doing this is to reduce the Level 0 backup time > by backing up the new database separatly.
