If you allready are a proficient C programmer ESQL/C may be ok. I can however not at all see why 4GL should give me any headache for this kind of work. It hasn't so far (and I am very concerned about this issue :-). Additionally I think 4GL is a better language for many kinds of database work on Informix databases because it works at a much higher level. Generally it is easier when it comes to creating correct programs. In most cases I also doubt that the speed difference is realy significant. If it is, and that is a concern, you should of course use ESQL/C. There are also many other cases where you need the low level programming power of C, where ESQL/C is appropriate. Otherwise I much prefer higher level languages. :C is ideal for reading flat files and combined with the power of :embedded SQL, there really is no substitute. 4GL reads flat files just fine with the appropriate C-functions and have SQL built in. :Mike. :In article <580n7c$tcj@nntp.idgonline.no>, Nils Myklebust :<Nils.Myklebust@idg.no> writes :>david@temss2.main.temple.edu (David Tucker) wrote: :> :>:How do you update random rows within a table using data located with :>:an external flat file? :> :>We use some of the file io rutines available in the software :>repository at http://www.iiug.org to read the files in 4GL and do the :>updates. :> :> :-- :Mik Hobbs Nils.Myklebust@idg.no NM Data AS, P.O.Box 9090 Gronland, N-0133 Oslo, Norway My opinions are those of my company The Informix FAQ is at http://www.iiug.org
