HDR - export on secondary
Posted in 2016
User wanted to run an export on an HDR secondary by temporarily converting it to standard mode, then back to secondary. Experts explained this won't work: promoting secondary to standard causes fast recovery, breaking log synchronization with primary. Cannot resync without restore. Alternatives suggested: use myexport utility (doesn't require database lock) or demote to RSS with STOP_APPLY for dbexport.

On an existing HDR (11.70) I'd like running an export on the secondary node
while the primary server still needs to continue running.
On secondary node:
onmode -d standard
perform the export
onmode -d secondary
(HDR should start re-syncing)
Any suggestions or recommendations ? Thanks in advance.
I should have added: The export will just be used for testing purposes on another system so there's no need to use it for accurate restore / recovery actions.
Hans:
You cannot do that the way you are proposing to do it. When you promote the
secondary to primary it will execute fast recovery and at that point its
logical logs will no longer match those on the primary so you will NOT be
able to convert it back to a secondary without performing a restore.
If you want to run an export on the secondary - which you cannot do using
dbexport, as you know, because dbexport requires a database lock which you
cannot do on a secondary - you can use my dbexport replacement utility,
myexport. Myexport does not require a lock on the database. It uses various
other methods to get a consistent image of the database.
You can download myexport from the IIUG Software Repository (
www.iiug.org/software). You will also need my utils2_ak package (the latest
release is available on my website - www.askdbmgt.com/my-utilities.html)
and Jonathan Leffler's sqlcmd utility (v90.00 or later, from the IIUG
Software Repository).

A secondary turned into a standard server would write its own checkpoints=20
-> no way to get it sync'ing again, as a secondary, with the primary.
You could "demote" the HSEC into an RSS, make it updatable and -=20
temporarily - turn on STOP=5FAPPLY for running dbexport on this RSS.
This implicitly would turn the primary into a standard server.
Later you could turn the pair back into an HDR pair by using onmode -d=20
primary <sec=5Fname> and onmode -d secondary <pri=5Fname>.

Thanks Andreas, unfortunately your post's format is a bit confusing. Could you try posting the required commands again ? I'll check on my reference system then. Thanks in advance.
Thanks Art, it's clear that a later restore from the primary would be required. That won't be a problem. Reviewing my plans, thinking twice can sometimes help, offers another option: just use the existing backup as base for the test system. Guess this would be much easier and would have no impact on the production HDR.
