This is an OS configuration problem. Note first that the Kernel
parameters that Informix recommends in the release notes are simply
some minimum values for certain parameters that needed to be changed
in order to QA test the product on that platform. The errno=24 is
"Too many open files". You have to change the kernel PER-PROCESS
number of permitted open files and may have to ajust the system-wide
maximum number of open files. If memory serves, NCR's default is VERY
low for both. Increase the per process open files to some number MUCH
greater than the maximum number of chunks that you want (Online 7.xx
support up to 1024 chunks) set the system wide number (if configurable,
some newer kernels use a dynamic system table but still have a hard
per-process limit) high enough so that every oninit process can have
the maximum number of chunks open simultaneously plus more for clients
other applications (remember that every process opens three files at
startup).
