Neither -- that limit is probably 32k-1, though you would have to be
preparing a string variable, not a literal string.
The first limit applies to
SELECT * FROM Somewhere WHERE SomeColumn = "A very .... long string";
The very long string can't be more than 256 characters. Note that it only
applies to string literals -- you can use longer strings provided they are
represented by variables.
The second limit applies to the layout of ESQL/C source code. No line can
be more than 512 characters long, though a statement can extend of many
lines.
