Help, I need somebody, he

To: Paul@ecles.demon.co.uk In response to your e-mail, some humble opinions ... PE> [SNIP] > PROGRESS database. Does anybody have any experience of linking this DBMS > with Informix, is it possible, and if so how easy is it. (I'd need a on-line > connection I wouldn't want to do it with CSV files or anything silly like > that). I've never done it, but I can't imagine it would be fun ... Progress isn't even as open as Informix... :-) PE> Also as part of this new system purchase we're going to possibly upgrade > our RS6000 to a later model with more RAM. Would someone give me some > advice on what model to buy (I know this is the Informix group but I'd hope > somebody out there would be using a RS, if not then I apolgise for wasting > your time) I had a customer for several years running very much the same user config. Upgrading HW and going to OnLine *may* give a performance benefit depending on the app. The only problem we ever had was that we only had 32MB of RAM and that gave us all sorts of exciting entertainment. When we went up to 64MB of RAM, all our problems disappeared and we didn't even consider any upgrading after that. But it depends very much on the app. If you're doing lots of math (likely in MRP), you may want to go to a 360h. I don't really know where the C10 fits in. PE> System Usage: We will have around 32 concurrent users, using applications > developed mainly in Informix, and possibly Progress (see above), they all > use dumb WYSE terminals (that sounds a bit silly!). ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Why? I happen to be a big fan of dumb terminals. I think (and this may well be considered by many as flamebait), that dumb terminals are all a lot of sites need. And one of my biggest client had a major productivity drop after he installed Windows PC's as the terminal of choice - everyone was playing Solitaire!!! > We have a small (5 user) TCP/IP network running off the RS, > we are using the Informix Standard Engine, 4GL, R4GL and SQL. > The options I have currently looked at include:- > 1. Buy a IBM RS6000-360h with 128mb of RAM. > 2. Buy a model C10 with 128mb of RAM. > 3. Keep the current RS6000-320h and upgrade it to 128mb of RAM. > Would someone please advise me on the best course of action. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I'm far too modest to do any such thing. I don't want to be crucified by anybody for offering subjective opinions when I haven't really got a good idea of your site's specifics. :-) PE> Wwould we get greater speed performance by using Informix ON-LINE instead > of standard engine? If you're handling a lot of *big* tables, you might. I've seen 20% to 200%, (dare I say it?) depending on the app. But OnLine is a lot more work to look after. I would imagine your IBM dealer would be quite happy to allow you to benchmark various machines. So, to reiterate then (says Angus Deayton), it depends on the application... PE> I look forward to receiving some responses, I'm sorry for the length of this > post, it's us British people we're a bit dumb and talk to much! Don't say that to Jonathan Leffler! PE> Thanks....
