temporary variable

Is there a way to store information from a column that is defined as a date in a temporary variable and then use it for a comparison statment? I can't find anything in the Informix manuals for the 2.10.00B version that we are running which would adequately take care of this. I am running this version on a 4.3BSD UNIX machine.
