tbinit suid root (Problem?)
Posted in 1992
I was recently talking to a site running online 5.0 and the site administrator mentioned that he didn't like application software which was set user id to root. He was particularly concerned with tbinit since it was "a little more complex than cat(1)". No amount of reassurance would change his mind, coming from a systems background I can understand, but.... I am curious: if this concern is shared? if you run online (any version) have you had a problem with security of the engine? would be willing to sacrifice performance/features to eliminate the suid bit? do you care (honestly some users say "so?") ? please responed via e-mail and if there is any interest in the results I'll post/mail the collected lot (unless for whatever reasons a site chooses not to be identified) I would just like to have this information available for some of the discussions I get envolved with. //////////////// ////////// // Ross Hagglund ////// / /// Servers & Connectivity Engineer, ///// // //// //// // ///// 921 Sw Washington Suite 670 /// // ////// Portland, Oregon, USA, 97205 // // /////// Tel.:(503)221-2605, Fax.:(503)221-2633 / /////////// e-mail: ross@informix.com ////////////////
