RAW devices relocatable?
Posted in 1999

my raw devices for informix db are almost full.
it means there are 4 2gbytes sized logical volumens
(partitions on disks on hp-ux)
on 2 4gbytes disks (in summary 8 gbytes) which have to be
**moved** to a new and much bigger disk able to contain a lot of
additional raw devs too.
possible solution 1:
can i dd the raw devs from old to new disk?
(and then change the soft links to the new ones)
possible solution 2:
can i save informix db with ontape -s to tape,
and then reload with ontape -r onto the new raw devs,
(after made the soft links to the new ones) and start informix again?
who can help me?

You could do either. Unlike Octav, I would be inclined to use ontape,
because there's just less to do, you'll be alerted to any inaccuracies with
your re-linking earlier, and 8GBytes is not all that much data to archive
and restore.

Guten Tag.
This is going to depend on whether you used symbolic links to point to the
devices or not. If you pointed the chunk paths in Informix directly at the
physical device paths (e.g. /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s3) you're out of luck -- you'll
need to rebuild your instance.
If, however, you used symbolic links (e.g. /dev/online_root, which is a link
to /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s3), you're okay. You basically do the following:
- Shut down to quiescent mode
- Take a level-0 archive of your instance
- Take the engine offline
- Install the new disks
- repoint the symbolic links to the new devices
- Do a cold restore of your instance
Then you'll be all set.
