hdr two primary servers
Posted in 2017
A user with an HDR pair (IDS 11.70.FC8 on SUSE Linux, two Connection Managers, CSDK 3.70.FC8) suddenly ended up with two primary servers and asked how to prevent it. Respondents identified this as the classic HDR "split-brain", usually triggered by a network outage causing the secondary to be promoted while the primary is still up; a developerWorks blog post on modifying the alarmprogram to reduce the risk was cited, and recovery requires restoring the intended secondary from the primary and resyncing. Advice: a properly configured Connection Manager should almost never allow this, so the vendor who installed it should check the setup, and ideally the CM should run on a third machine using a network path/NIC separate from the primary-secondary link. The poster couldn't change configs (vendor warranty) and no specific root cause or fix was confirmed in the thread.

Hi, We have an hdr system one server is primary and the other is the secondary, also we have 2 connection managers. The last week we have a problem and suddenly we had two primary servers. My question is, is there avoid this situation ? I meant if one server is up as the primary, then that the other server never ups ? Thanks in advance. --001a113776f2c515a9054ac88f53
This sounds like the "split-brain" problem, which can occur when there is a loss of network connectivity causing the secondary server to be promoted to a primary, even though the primary is still running. It is described here, together with a suggestion for modifying the alarmprogram to reduce the chances of this happening: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/blogs/informix_admins_blog/entr y/preventing_hdr_split_brain_scenaro?lang=en Unfortunately, once this has occurred, you need to restore the server that you want as a secondary from the primary and sync it up again. How are you promoting the secondary when the primary is down? Via the DRAUTO setting or using the Connection Managers? Also please supply version and platform for the engine and CM installations. The promotion is via connection manager, The system is an Suse Linux System 11, with informix 11.70fc8. OK, so 11.70FC8 with CSDK 3.70.FC8. Using Connection Manager for promoting the secondary if the primary is down. Got it. Please post the following and we will try to help you figure out what went wrong: - ONCONFIG values for - DRAUTO - DBSERVERNAME - DBSERVERALIASES - HA_ALIAS - Connection Manager config files for both CM instances - sqlhosts files from the server and the two CM instances (especially if they are not all identical). Feel free to obfuscate actual IP addresses and port numbers - just be consistent. - Where do the CM instances reside? Same as the servers? Other hosts (post these IPs & services/ports - or pseudo IPs & ports)? Art Art S. Well this solution was sold to us by a provider and is still in warranty, we still can't update any config file, but I like to know if this was normal or if there is something that can be done to fix, to ask the provider to fix before the warranty expire. I think this occurred when the secondary server was as the primary and a network fail occurred. Thanks in advance. > El 15/03/2017, a las 11:58, Art Kagel <art.kagel@gmail.com> escribió: > > OK, so 11.70FC8 with CSDK 3.70.FC8. A properly configured Connection Manager managed failover should almost NEVER result in a split-brain scenario with two primary servers. That is one CM's design principles. So contact your vendor 'cause something's not right. If they can't figure it out, they can hire me to set them straight. B^) Art Art S. The ideal configuration is for the connection manager to be on a machine which is neither the primary nor the secondary server AND for the network path to be distinct from the one that is being used by the primary/secondary communication. Ideally that would also include distinct NIC ports.
