I stumbled upon the solution today. It turns out that the server was listening on the wrong ethernet interface. Two interfaces on the Sun have the hostname 'www', but in different domains. The netstat command showed that ifmx_srvc was not listening to the network on which the PC was located. I edited my sqlhosts file so the hostname included the domain, and everything worked!
