The connection has to pass OS user authentication. Also, check on things like overall system activity on the really busy days. Finally it may be that the client is having difficult getting the server IP address from the DNS. On the days where it is really sluggish, you might consider using a hard coded IP address and service number in the sqlhost file - just to isolate the problem a bit.
