compiling w/CSDK
Posted in 2016
Brad asked whether a C program with embedded SQL can be compiled using GCC plus the Informix CSDK, and if so why anyone would buy ESQL/C separately. Responders explained that GCC alone can't handle embedded SQL — the ESQL/C preprocessor first translates it into C, which any compatible C compiler (including GCC) can then compile — and that ESQL/C has been bundled free inside CSDK for years, with only support being chargeable. Art noted the esql script may need its compiler options tweaked for GCC on some platforms. Brad confirmed this answered his question.

Silly question time, but ... can you compile a C program with embedded SQL statements using GCC and the Informix CSDK? If so, why would anyone purchase ESQL/C? Is there additional functionality in ESQL/C that is not in CSDK? What functionality? Thanks. Brad
Yes No idea - maybe they are idiots :) No idea Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of DAY BRAD Sent: Friday, April 29, 2016 4:17 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: compiling w/CSDK [37064] Silly question time, but ... can you compile a C program with embedded SQL statements using GCC and the Informix CSDK? Hi Brad, C language compiler such as GCC alone will not compile embedded SQL statements The ESQL/C pre processor convert the embedded SQL statements to C language equivalent function call. This generated C language source file can be compile by using C language compiler such as GCC etc. Regards, Satyan Advisory Software Engineer R&D - IBM Information Management Division 11200 Lakeview, Lenexa, KS 66219 Tel: 913 599 8792 (T/L: 337-8792) From: "DAY BRAD" <bday@sent.com> To: ids@iiug.org Date: 04/29/2016 04:17 PM Subject: compiling w/CSDK [37064] Sent by: ids-bounces@iiug.org Silly question time, but ... can you compile a C program with embedded SQL statements using GCC and the Informix CSDK? ESQL/C is provided free in the CSDK. You only pay if you want support. --EEM > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of > DAY BRAD > Sent: Friday, April 29, 2016 16:17 PM > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: compiling w/CSDK [37064] > > Silly question time, but ... can you compile a C program with embedded > SQL statements using GCC and the Informix CSDK? ESQL/C is now a component of CSDK. Recent versions (released in the last 15-20 years) o= f ESQL/C are only available via CSDK. So unless you are using a particularly old version o= f informix you should not want it. ----- Original message ----- From: "DAY BRAD" <bda= y@sent.com> Sent by: ids-bounces@iiug.org To: ids@iiug.org Cc:<= br>Subject: compiling w/CSDK [37064] Date: Fri, Apr 29, 2016 4:17 PM = Silly question time, but ... can you compile a C program with embedded= SQL statements using GCC and the Informix CSDK? Just to reiterate Brad: CSDK includes ESQL/C since shortly before IBM bought Informix and it is free. If you want support for CSDK itself, you can pay for support, otherwise there is no cost. You can compile ESQL/C programs using the CSDK and any C compiler compatible with the platform and wordsize of the CSDK package (ie 32bit or 64bit). That includes GCC (though on some platforms you may have to modify the esql script to change the compiler options from the native compiler options to the equivalent GCC options). Art Art S. All, Thanks for confirming what I thought was the case. I just couldn't see why IBM was still selling the product if CSDK did everything, but now I see that they are selling the support, not the product.
