Hi Greg, i've read the header of some tapes from OnLine5.x archives. I think, the sequence number of the tape is byte 15 or 16 or these two bytes together. Please try : dd if=/dev/tape bs=1 skip=14 count=2 | od (for /dev/tape you must type the name of your tapedevice) I hope this 'll help. Ruediger Papke
