How to use SQLEXPLAIN

I recall sometime back request was posted inquiring on the use of SQLEXPLAIN to optimize/compare SQL statements (e.g. using: SELECT DISTINCT ... vs. SELECT ... GROUP BY ... ) There is an article in the Informix Systems Journal, Volume 2 Number 1 from Summer 1996, page 13, entitled "The Quality of Your SQL" by Gavin Nour. this has proven to be quite useful to me, and I would encourage anyone who wants to optimize there SQL coding to start by reading this.
